Dietary habits effect our lives, for both, deficiency or for excess of nutrients, and, together with a host of other factors, play a role in the development of the chronic diseases that are more frequently seen in this era of increased longevity.
The diet related risk factors can be dealt with and modified throughout life, also in advanced age, but appropriate strategies are needed to induce their changes.
Italian children appear to retrace the same dietary mistakes of all populations with high levels of industrial and economic development, although the legacy bequeathed by our ancestors with the values and the validity of the "Mediterranean diet" seems to protect them in some way.
The impression I gained from many conversations with parents and children of different generations is that, in the diet of Italian children, the intake of fiber and Phytochemicals (chemical substances of plant origin) is well below the recommended amounts (5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day), and fish consumption is even lower; consumption of carbohydrates, in the form of bread and pasta, is large, and the consumption of red meat is medium-high.
The positive note is the high prevalence of families who say they only consume extra-virgin olive oil (but raw and cooked?)
Children seem to take an adequate amount of Phytochemicals and fiber only from the sixth month of life to a year and a half old, mainly in the form of pureed, grated or homogenized vegetables and fruits.
After the changeover to the typical way of adults, only 20% of children seem to enjoy eating fruits and vegetables. This is probably due to the fact that they do not like their taste, or because they require longer chewing, and perhaps, because of the availability and access to plentiful appealing foods, with meals and outside the meals. From a certain age onwards, the child is allowed a considerable amount of food autonomy, which in combination with mothers who are not very careful, can lead to a monotonous diet, rich in processed and pro-inflammatory foods, high in calories and low in fiber and antioxidants.
Dear mothers, it is not possible to categorically define to what extent this kind of dietary habits can affect our health status and that of our children, but it is certain that an adequate intake of antioxidants and fiber results in a reduced risk of degenerative diseases, and allows the control of chronic diseases in adulthood.

For a long time sleep was considered a passive phenomenon, necessary for the proper functioning of the central nervous...

In humans the eating behavior, provides a dual function: on one hand it helps to control energy balance and nutrition; on the other, regulates the exchange of the individual with its environment. These functions are interdependent, and integrity of each is necessary for the harmonious functioning of the person. The eating disorders depend on alteration of one, or more, of these functions....

Beautiful days are starting, and dramatically you realize that summer is near, and it is time to take countermeasures: crazy diets, endless sessions in the gym, massages, and purchase of tons of miracle creams. The truth is that, in reality, the right time to start the “bikini test” program for the following year is the very same day you return from summer vacation.
This is the theory, hard...
